China’s 5G patent haul delivers limited pay-off, expert says
China has built one of the world’s largest 5G patent portfolios, but the financial return has lagged the headline numbers, according to an industry expert cited by Light Reading. Despite the volume of filings, Chinese companies are not capturing a share of licensing fees and commercial upside that matches their patent count.
The analysis suggests that simply amassing patents has not translated into bargaining power or steady income, raising questions about patent quality, global enforceability and how effectively Chinese firms license their 5G technology abroad. It underlines a gap between China’s technical participation in 5G standards and the economic value it extracts from that work.
