BT unveils new ‘sovereign platform’ for enterprise customers
BT has launched a new “sovereign platform” aimed at UK businesses and public sector bodies that want tighter control over where their data and digital operations sit. The services will run on UK-based infrastructure and be supported only by UK staff, covering areas such as networks, cloud-hosted applications and AI tools. BT pitches the move as a response to geopolitical tension and customer demand for clearer guarantees on data location and operational control.
The platform will support a phased rollout of sovereign-branded voice, cloud and AI services over the coming months, with sovereign options for more core BT Business products promised by the first half of 2026. BT, a founding member of the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum, is aligning this offer with the government’s push to grow domestic data centre and AI capacity. Analysts note that sovereign services are becoming more common as organisations seek to reduce foreign legal exposure and meet tougher regulation, but warn that tighter sovereignty can mean higher costs, fewer suppliers and slower access to global technology. BT has not yet released detailed technical specifications, pricing, or confirmation of compliance with standards such as Cyber Essentials or forthcoming UK sovereign AI rules, which procurement teams will watch closely.
