5G Americas winds down operations
Industry group 5G Americas will formally dissolve on 27 February, after its board of governors approved a shutdown plan. The association started in 2003 as 3G Americas and rebranded as mobile technology advanced, taking on the 5G name in 2016. Its members include AT&T, Cisco, Ericsson, Mavenir, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung and Airspan.
In its closing statement, 5G Americas claimed a key role in supporting 5G development across the Western Hemisphere, from the shift away from 4G through early work on 5G-Advanced and initial 6G discussions. The board said the decision reflects how the cellular industry has continued to change. President Viet Nguyen called the move a strategic choice tied to the group’s mission and timing, arguing the wireless market is now strong, commercially mature and globally competitive.
